Images of Snow, Words of Charcoal

Poems & Photographs by Mylene Hengen

"Athens mountains, Parnitha, Penteli, Korynthe, villages, hidden monestaries and the howling silent landscapes mark what most urban Greeks ignore and what, perhaps, informs the Greek rural life-ways...."The Queen

I’m not sure I believe
The dittydaisy of your tales
Your largelylittle rhetoric
Your screechy little voice.

I’m sure that you are false
And all that lies behind
Serried-sums of sequential failures
Charbroiled disaster.

I see your strength, I do
Your micromacro tension
Your powderperfect hope

The queen is dead. Long live the queen.

"Rather than eliciting a personal response, a Barthes's Punctum of sorts, of visual information, I'd rather like to point out to the visual silences in these images..."Golden Cage

Golden Cage.
There’s no reason but a multitude of muted voices
My internal dialogue is silenced by your charcoaled outline
Charcoal, never erasing, leaves a smudged reminder of what I lack
While I quietly miss things, places, words
Please don’t touch or feed the animals.
They aren’t acquainted to your expectations.

Snowfall. At 5 am the birds wake before you.

About these images

Athens mountains, Parnitha, Penteli, Korynthe, villages, hidden monestaries and the howling silent landscapes mark what most urban Greeks ignore and what, perhaps, informs the Greek rural life-ways. Rather than eliciting a personal response, a Barthes’s Punctum of sorts, of visual information, I’d rather like to capture the quiet spaces of internal places.

"...The mind's imaginary capturing, rather, the quiet spaces within what is captured, the non-words of internal places." -MH

Mylene Hengen is a PhD student in Anthropology in Paris working on Indigenous arts in North America and is also an avid writer and photographer, inspired by capturing the non-seen and non-said.  Any correspondance to the artist may be sent to the editors for forwarding.

This work is so magnificent! I see a bit of Robert Frost’s ability to bring nature to life, coupled with a bit of Edna St. Vincent Millay’s connection to the soul. But all of this is accomplished with a unique freshness and style that offers a wonderful new contribution to the world of poetry. Thank you, Mylene Hengen, for giving us this gift.
